The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) in New Delhi, has registered a criminal case against a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Delhi Police for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹50,000 from a private citizen.
The First Information Report (FIR), registered on January 13, 2026, follows a formal complaint and a subsequent verification process that confirmed the official’s demand for an “undue advantage”.
The Accused and the Allegations
The case names Shri Sanjay Kumar, a Sub-Inspector posted at the Dwarka North Police Station (Sector-17), as the sole accused.
The complainant, Shri Sunny Sangwan, a resident of Najafgarh, alleged that the SI attempted to extort money in exchange for legal favors. According to the complaint:
- The Notice: On January 7, 2026, Sangwan received a notice to join an investigation regarding a pre-existing case (FIR No. 460/24).
- The Meeting: When Sangwan met SI Sanjay Kumar on January 9 at the Dwarka North Police Station, the officer allegedly demanded ₹50,000.
- The “Deal”: The SI allegedly promised that in exchange for the payment, he would not oppose Sangwan’s anticipatory bail application and would favor him during the ongoing investigation.
- The Threat: It was further alleged that the SI threatened to implicate Sangwan more deeply in the case if the bribe was not paid.
CBI Verification and Legal Action
Unwilling to pay the bribe, Sangwan approached the CBI on January 12, 2026. To confirm the allegations, the CBI conducted a verification operation in the presence of an independent witness—an Assistant Manager from the National Housing Bank.
The verification report concluded that there was prima facie evidence of a bribe demand. Consequently, a regular case has been registered under:
- Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018): Relating to a public servant taking an undue advantage .
