LUCKNOW – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a formal case against a Northern Railway official for allegedly demanding a hefty bribe to process a pension claim. The First Information Report (FIR) was filed on January 27, 2026, following a written complaint and subsequent verification.
The Accused and Charges
The primary accused has been identified as Akash Tyagi, an Accountant serving in the Office of the Senior Divisional Finance Manager, Lucknow Division, Northern Railway.
The CBI has registered the case under the following legal provisions:
- Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023: Relating to criminal conspiracy.
- Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018): Relating to public servants being bribed.
Details of the Complaint
The investigation was initiated based on a complaint lodged by Shri Abhishek Singh, a resident of Chitwapur Khas, Lucknow. According to the FIR, Singh’s aunt, Ms. Rani Gautam, had a pending pension file that was being processed by Tyagi.
Singh alleged that during a conversation on approximately January 22, 2026, Tyagi demanded a bribe totaling ₹3.5 lakhs to facilitate the pension process:
- ₹1,00,000 to be paid immediately after the generation of the Pension Payment Order (PPO).
- ₹2,50,000 to be paid following the final settlement of the claim amount.
On the day the complaint was filed, the accused reportedly informed Singh that the PPO had been issued and instructed him to visit the office to finalize the deal.
CBI Action and Investigation
Unwilling to pay the bribe, Abhishek Singh approached the CBI. The agency conducted a “discreet verification” of the allegations, which substantiated the claim that Tyagi had indeed demanded an undue advantage.
The FIR (Case No. RC0062026A0003) was authorized by Sunil Dutt, Additional Superintendent of Police, CBI, ACB, Lucknow. The agency has officially entrusted the investigation to Inspector Amit Kumar, who will lead the probe into the involvement of Tyagi and any other unknown individuals associated with the case.
