LUCKNOW – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB), Lucknow, has registered a corruption case against a high-ranking Northern Railway official for allegedly demanding a bribe from a retired colleague to process a permit renewal.

The Incident

The case involves Shri Vineet Katiyar, the Assistant Commercial Manager (ACM) for Northern Railway in Lucknow. According to the First Information Report (FIR), the legal trouble began following a written complaint filed on April 6, 2026, by Shri Vinod Kumar Singh, a retired Traveling Ticket Examiner (TTE).

Mr. Singh, a resident of Varanasi, had been operating an Automatic Ticket Vending Machine (ATVM) at the Varanasi Junction Railway Station. To continue his operations, he submitted a renewal application to the Northern Railway office in Lucknow.

The Demand and Threat

While the permission letter for the ATVM renewal had reportedly been issued, it was never handed over to the complainant. The FIR alleges that ACM Vineet Katiyar demanded ₹50,000 as “undue advantage” to release the document.

The situation grew more pressured when the official allegedly threatened to cancel the already-issued permit if the bribe was not paid.

CBI Intervention

Unwilling to comply with the corrupt demand, the retired TTE approached the CBI. The agency conducted a “discreet verification” of the allegations, which substantiated that a demand for a bribe—settled at ₹40,000 during the process—was indeed made by the accused official.

The CBI has officially booked Katiyar under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), which deals with public servants taking bribes.

Investigation Status

The case (RC0062026A0012) was registered on the afternoon of April 6. Shivani Tewari, IPS, DIG and Head of Branch at CBI ACB Lucknow, authorized the FIR. The investigation has now been entrusted to Shri Ashish Kumar Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy. SP), for further action.
