NEW DELHI: The Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a criminal case against a worker of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for allegedly demanding a bribe to prevent the demolition of a residential property.

The Complaint

The action followed a written complaint filed on March 30, 2026, by Shri Prem Chand Pal, a resident of Village Tahirpur, Delhi. According to the complainant, the accused, identified as Giriraj Bansal, a Beldar (worker) posted at MCD Shahdara, visited his house a few days prior.

Bansal allegedly claimed that the ongoing renovation/construction of the house was “illegal” and threatened that it would be demolished.

On the morning of March 30, the accused reportedly contacted the complainant via telephone and demanded a bribe of ₹80,000 as “protection money” to ensure the structure was not razed by the civic body.

CBI Verification

mediately initiated a verification process led by Sub-Inspector Kundan Kumar, in the presence of an independent witness from the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

The verification report confirmed the allegations, noting that the accused had negotiated the bribe amount down to ₹75,000 during the proceedings.

Legal Action and Investigation

Based on the verification findings, which prima facie disclosed the commission of a cognizable offence, the CBI registered a regular case on March 31, 2026. The accused has been booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), which deals with public servants taking undue advantage.

The case has been entrusted to Inspector Ravinder Kumar Bharti for further investigation.
