LUCKNOW – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a fresh case against Ajay Sharma, the former Superintendent of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) in Jhansi, for allegedly amassing assets worth over ₹3.53 crore beyond his known sources of income.
The First Information Report (FIR), registered on March 23, 2026, alleges that Sharma’s wealth grew by a staggering 319% during a four-year “check period”.
The Investigation and Check Perio
The CBI initiated the probe based on a written complaint by Ranu Choudhary, Additional Superintendent of Police, CBI, ACB, Lucknow. The agency focused on a specific “check period” from January 1, 2022, to January 5, 2026.
According to the FIR, the investigation into Sharma’s finances was a spin-off from a previous case (RC0062025A0033). That earlier case involved allegations that CGST officers in Jhansi demanded a ₹1.5 crore bribe to settle tax liabilities for two local firms, M/s Jai Ambey Plywood and M/s Jai Durga Hardware, following searches at their premises.
Seized Assets: Cash, Jewelry, and Luxury Cars
The agency’s findings include a vast array of high-value assets held in the name of Sharma and his family members, primarily his wife, Neelam Sharma:
- Cash Recoveries: Approximately ₹70.8 lakh in cash was recovered during various searches and locker operations.
- Jewelry: Valuations of jewelry found in lockers and at his residence exceeded ₹1.11 crore.
- Real Estate: Multiple properties and sale deeds were uncovered, including homes in Ganesh Residency, Shivaji Nagar, and Space Moon City in Jhansi, with some valued as high as ₹73 lakh individually.
- Vehicles: A Mahindra XUV 700, purchased in February 2025 in his wife’s name for ₹24.17 lakh, is part of the assets list.
Legal Charges and Family Involvement
The CBI has booked Ajay Sharma under Section 13(2) read with 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), which pertains to criminal misconduct by a public servant through the acquisition of disproportionate assets.
The agency also noted that Smt. Neelam Sharma’s role is under scrutiny for potential abetment. The probe has been entrusted to Sabhajeet Chauhan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, for further investigation.
