CBI Registers Bribery Case Against Senior Railway Engineer in Dhanbad Over ₹50,000 Demand

Dhanbad, March 6, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Anti-Corruption Branch, Dhanbad, has registered a Regular Case (RC 2(A)/2026-D) against Shri Sanjeev Kumar, Senior Divisional Electrical Engineer (General) [Sr. DEE(G)], East Central Railway, DRM Office, Dhanbad, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018).

The case pertains to a bribery (trap) offence. According to the FIR, the accused allegedly demanded illegal gratification of around 2% (approximately ₹50,000) from a private contractor for clearing pending bills totaling ₹24,96,390.

Complainant’s Allegations

The FIR was registered on the basis of a written complaint dated February 23, 2026, filed by Shri Anil Kumar Jha, Partner, M/s Sweta Electrons, Dhanbad, resident of Vinod Nagar More, Dhanbad.

Shri Jha alleged that Shri Sanjeev Kumar, while posted as Sr. DEE(G) at the DRM Office, Dhanbad, demanded bribe for passing four bills related to works executed by his firm.
The total value of these bills stands at ₹24,96,390. The complainant claimed that the official insisted on receiving approximately ₹50,000 (2% of the bill amount) to clear the payments.


CBI Verification and Action

The CBI stated that the veracity of the allegations was discreetly verified by an officer of the Anti-Corruption Branch, who confirmed the demand of bribe by the accused official. The verification report dated February 23, 2026, along with its enclosures, has been enclosed with the FIR.

The CBI’s FIR, registered at 08:45 hrs on March 6, 2026, notes that the facts prima facie disclose the commission of a cognizable offence punishable under Section 7 of the PC Act. The case has been entrusted for investigation to Shri Vikash Kumar Pathak, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Dy. SP), CBI, ACB, Dhanbad.

The complaint was received in the CBI office on February 23, 2026 (Entry No. 385), and there was no delay reported in filing the FIR. The place of occurrence has been mentioned as the DRM Office, near Railway Station, East Central Railway, Dhanbad, approximately 4.2 km south-west of the CBI ACB Police Station.

Official Communication

The CBI has forwarded the original FIR to the Hon’ble Special Judge, CBI Cases, Dhanbad, through a letter (No. 639/703/2(A)/2026-D) signed by Shri R. S. Solanki, Additional Superintendent of Police, CBI: ACB: Dhanbad. The letter, dated March 6, 2026, requests the court to take necessary action on the enclosed FIR.

This is the latest in a series of corruption cases being pursued by the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch in the Dhanbad railway division. The investigation is currently underway, and no arrest has been reported so far.

The accused officer, Shri Sanjeev Kumar, has not yet commented on the allegations. The CBI has not released any further details regarding the ongoing probe.
