NEW DELHI – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a corruption case against an official of the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) for allegedly demanding a bribe from a private hospital to reactivate its suspended cashless medical facility.
The Suspended Services
The case was initiated following a written complaint filed on April 6, 2026, by Shri Manoj Kumar Upadhyay, Deputy General Manager of Silver Streak Multi Specialty Hospital located in Manesar, Gurugram. According to the complaint, the hospital’s cashless facilities were temporarily halted by the insurance company following a surprise visit by a manager on February 10, 2026.
Shri Santosh Kumar Jain, an official with National Insurance Co. Ltd. in Delhi, was subsequently deputed to conduct an inquiry into the issues raised during that visit.
Negotiated Bribe and Part-Payment
The FIR alleges that during a meeting at the hospital on March 29, 2026, and through subsequent telephone calls, Jain demanded a bribe to restore the hospital’s cashless status. While the initial demand was reported as ₹3 lakh, it was later negotiated to ₹2.6 lakh.
The complainant further alleged that a part-payment of ₹1 lakh was already handed over to the accused on April 5, 2026, at a McDonald’s outlet in a Rohini mall in Delhi. The remaining balance of ₹1.6 lakh was reportedly scheduled for delivery on April 7, 2026.
Official Action and Investigation
Unwilling to pay the remaining amount, the hospital management approached the CBI. A verification conducted by the agency’s Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) confirmed the prima facie evidence of the bribe demand.
The CBI has registered a regular case against Santosh Kumar Jain under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018). The agency is also looking into the potential role of Hanuman Meena, a manager at the insurance company, during the course of the investigation.
The probe has been entrusted to Inspector Anshul Sharma of the CBI, ACB, Delhi.
