NEW DELHI – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Internal Operations Division (IOD), New Delhi, has registered a regular case against four individuals for allegedly operating a transnational cyber-enabled financial crime network. The syndicate is accused of targeting foreign nationals since July 2024, using sophisticated tech-support scams to defraud victims.

The FIR (RC2312026S0006), registered on January 28, 2026, names the following primary accused:
- Tejasv Sharma: Resident of Sector 6, Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
- Chandan Kumar Ray: Resident of Vaishali, Bihar.

Additionally, they are booked under Section 66-D of the IT Act, 2000, for cheating by personation using computer resources.
Modus Operandi: The “Microsoft” Trap
The investigation was triggered by the targeting of a 75-year-old Singaporean citizen, Michael Lee Mui Soon, while he was in Sydney on July 1, 2024. According to the CBI, the victim’s laptop displayed a fake alert claiming the device had been hacked.
When the victim contacted the helpline number displayed on the screen, he was connected to the accused persons posing as the “Microsoft Cyber Security Team”. They induced him to install a remote-viewing application, granting them unauthorized access to his laptop. Once the victim logged into his bank account under their guidance, the accused executed unauthorized transfers from his DBS Bank account to various international and Indian accounts.
Ongoing Investigation
The case was registered based on source information received on January 20, 2026. The investigation has been entrusted to Vilas Bala Mhadgut, Deputy Superintendent of Police, CBI. The agency is currently working to identify “unknown others” involved in the conspiracy and explore the full extent of the transnational network.
