Kota: The Rajasthan government has intensified its response following the death of four women after childbirth and the deterioration in health of several other patients at Kota’s New Medical College Hospital. In view of the seriousness of the incident, Medical and Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar is visiting Kota today to personally review the situation and assess hospital functioning.
The tragic episode has triggered widespread concern over healthcare standards, infection control, and treatment protocols in government hospitals across the state.
High-Level Emergency Meeting Held in Jaipur
Before departing for Kota, Health Minister Khimsar chaired a high-level review meeting at the Health Bhawan in Jaipur.
During the meeting, Principal Secretary Gayatri Rathore and a team of medical experts submitted their preliminary findings after returning from Kota. The minister reportedly issued strict instructions for a comprehensive investigation into every possible aspect connected to the deaths.
The state government has directed officials to examine:
- The quality and safety of medicines administered to patients
- Possibility of hospital-acquired infections
- Any human negligence or procedural lapses
- Compliance with standard treatment protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
The minister also ordered that laboratory reports of medicine and equipment samples be expedited to determine whether contamination or faulty supplies played any role in the incident.
Major Action Taken by Government So Far
The Rajasthan government has already initiated disciplinary action against several medical staff members in connection with the case.
Actions Taken Include:
Suspension of Medical Staff
Three doctors and four nursing personnel have been suspended after preliminary findings reportedly indicated possible negligence during treatment.
Contract Doctor Dismissed
A doctor appointed on an Urgent Temporary Basis (UTB) has been terminated from service.
Notices Issued to Hospital Authorities
Show-cause notices have been served to the superintendents of:
- New Medical College Hospital, Kota
- JK Lon Hospital, Kota
Officials have been asked to explain administrative and medical lapses linked to the incident.
Minister to Inspect Hospitals Personally
During his visit to Kota, Minister Khimsar will inspect both the New Medical College Hospital and JK Lon Hospital.
Sources said the minister is expected to:
- Visit hospital wards
- Interact directly with patients and their families
- Review sanitation and infection-control systems
- Examine emergency response protocols
- Hold meetings with doctors and administrative officials
The government aims to gather ground-level feedback regarding the functioning of the hospitals and the actual conditions faced by patients.
SOP Compliance and Infection Control Under Focus
The incident has also put renewed focus on adherence to hospital SOPs and infection prevention systems in Rajasthan’s public healthcare institutions.
Medical experts believe that maternal care units require strict hygiene standards, continuous monitoring, sterilization protocols, and timely intervention mechanisms to avoid complications and infections.
The Health Department is now expected to conduct broader reviews of maternity and critical care facilities in other government hospitals as well.
More Strict Action Likely After Final Report
Health Minister Khimsar has made it clear that stronger action will follow once the final investigation report is submitted.
Officials indicated that if evidence of negligence, procedural violations, or administrative failure emerges, additional suspensions, departmental inquiries, or legal proceedings may be initiated against responsible individuals.
The case has become a major political and administrative issue in Rajasthan, with opposition parties and healthcare activists demanding accountability and systemic reforms in government hospitals.
