Fresh FIR Registered in 20-Year-Old Cold Case; Investigation Revived with Modern Forensic Techniques
Thiruvananthapuram, January 1, 2026:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially reopened a 20-year-old unsolved murder case involving an unidentified woman found dead in Kerala’s Malappuram district. Acting on directions from the Kerala High Court, the agency registered a fresh FIR (RC0342026S0001) on January 1, 2026, marking a significant development in the long-pending investigation.
Body Found in Rubber Plantation in 2004
The case dates back to December 28, 2004, when the body of an unidentified woman, estimated to be around 35 years old, was discovered in a rubber plantation near the Perinthalmanna–Kolathur Road in Malappuram district.
The woman, dressed in a yellow blouse and skirt, was found under suspicious circumstances by a local resident, prompting the registration of a case at Perinthalmanna Police Station.
Murder Confirmed, But Case Went Cold
Initially registered under Section 174 CrPC (unnatural death), the case took a serious turn after a post-mortem examination at Kozhikode Medical College confirmed death by strangulation, leading to the addition of murder charges under Section 302 IPC.
Despite years of investigation between 2004 and 2009:
- The victim’s identity remained unknown
- No suspects were identified
- The case was ultimately classified as “undetected” and closed
Legal Push Revives Investigation
The case resurfaced after a petition was filed before the Kerala High Court seeking a reinvestigation. Following this:
- The Crime Branch re-registered the case in 2023
- Fresh investigation efforts began in 2022
In a decisive move, the Kerala High Court, on November 20, 2025, ordered the transfer of the case to the CBI for an independent and thorough probe.
CBI Steps In with Fresh FIR
Complying with the High Court directive, the CBI has now:
- Re-registered the case in 2026
- Assigned a dedicated investigation team
- Initiated a fresh probe using advanced forensic tools
The investigation is currently being handled by Inspector Biju N under the supervision of senior CBI officials.
Focus on Identity and Justice
The primary objectives of the renewed investigation include:
- Establishing the identity of the victim
- Tracing those responsible for the crime
- Re-examining evidence with modern forensic advancements
A Step Toward Justice in Cold Cases
The reopening of this case underscores the importance of judicial oversight and the evolving capabilities of investigative agencies in solving cold cases. It also brings renewed hope for justice, even after decades of uncertainty.
